It carried over to their respective stage presences, as well. Having said that, of course they opened with a cut from Children: "Beyond the Pale," a song that only reinforced my assertion about their stadium bona fides. This is their "Deja Vu" tour, after all, so the set leaned heavily on early albums God's Own Medicine and Carved in Sand. One might call them "arena ready," in an alternate reality where they were playing to Cure-sized audiences. In contrast to ToH's snarly gothcore and the Chameleons' aural landscapes, the Mission's music is more anthemic. Their performance really drove home the differences in the styles of the respective bands on the bill. The Chameleons' set was over all too soon, the band tearing through the likes of "Swamp Thing" and "Home Is Where the Heart Is" before closing with "Second Skin," which Burgess dedicated to his mother, who passed shortly after this tour started and pointedly (and profanely) told him not to quit the tour to be by her side.ĭespite going through several lineups (like just about every band formed 30+ years ago) the Mission's current incarnation comprises three original members: Wayne Hussey (via Dead or Alive and Sisters of Mercy), bassist Craig Adams, and guitarist Simon Hinkler. odd medley that included the Doors, "Eleanor Rigby," Buffalo Springfield, and the Smiths Photo by Pete Vonder Haar And his voice is still as harrowing as ever, conferring its sinister chill on songs like "Monkey Land" and a rendition of "Souls In Isolation" which featured an. Always the perfect combination of class rage ("For Christ's sake give us something!") and sonic atmospherics, Mark Burgess and company never got the attention they were due, influencing the '80s Manchester scene without actually benefiting from it. Not gonna lie, they're who I was at WOMH last night to see. Still, Kirk Brandon and Theater of Hate received appreciation for "Original Sin" and "Do You Believe in the Westworld?" "Propaganda" is also as bouncy a tune that references Nazi radio broadcasts as you're likely to get. Of the three, most of the audience were most familiar with the headliner. Given what we know of local crowds and cranky aging goth/post-punk performers, that was probably for the best. With three bands on the bill, there wasn't time for any deep dives into the material. Theater of Hate and the Mission also traded band members during their heady break-up/reformation periods. The Chameleons and the Mission were also forced, for a time, to add "U.K." to their names domestically in order to differentiate themselves from identically named American counterparts. The lineup went in band chronological order (ToH formed in 1980, the Chameleons in 1981, and the Mission in 1986). Sure, if "Deliverance" or "Don't Fall" or (maybe) "Original Sin" pops up on your Smart Shuffle, the average listener might go, "Hey, I remember that song." But no one could honestly claim Theatre of Hate, the Chameleons, or the Mission enjoy the universality of their more popular contemporaries. Potahto.Īll three of last night's bands had something in common besides being goth and/or post-punk darlings: they all fetched up short on the shores of musical fame. Or maybe Ticketmaster's just pinching pennies by cutting down on printer ink. Maybe it's because the idea of having experienced something before is increasingly ubiquitous as more and more GenX era bands embark on what may be their final outings. My ticket for last night's "Deja Vu" tour didn't even mention the acts involved (they're in the topline of this post), just the date and venue.

The trailer would have pretty much shown everything you need to know about the plot. This does not apply to those who are for the notion of true love, happiness and that institution called Marriage, and for a film whose protagonist celebrates and actually enjoys his freedom and singlehood, it ends with a cop-out smack in the face. Call it insurance, or the hardening of the heart, and if you're to subscribe to the tips shared in this film, it's preaching to love a little less if you're to walk away unscathed. I'm pretty sure many who have gone through a break-up would admit to having it leave some bad aftertaste, that you'd just want the upper hand the next time around when dealing with that painful, negative emotion, should and if it happens. There are reasons abound why some are either commitment freaks, or just plainly wanting to chalk up a list of conquests to show off, and for top fashion photographer Connor Meat, erm I mean Mead (Matthew McConaughey), it's a run from responsibility, and the fear of never ever wanting to be hurt again. Not quite a romantic comedy, but very close indeed.įor those who have played the field and sown some wild oats around town, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past might be a walk down a personal memory lane into why nothing lasts longer than possibly that first, genuine relationship. It's an enjoyable film with a smart cast, a preposterous story but a serious message about true love and selflessness. Although Uncle Wayne is a recovered womanizer, at least for now, his speeches about loneliness and broken hearts ring true only for the moment, but long enough to affect the hero. His flowing hair and Hollywood-tinted big glasses call to mind producer Robert Evans (The Kid Stays in the Picture). Following the party line about scoundrels getting what they deserve is ghost of Uncle Wayne, a sort of Gordon Gekko gone good, an oily ex-Lothario played with relish by another spot-on bit of casting, Michael Douglas. Since we all know enjoying casual sex is a no-no for descendants of Puritans, the outcome of the ghostly apparitions' lessons is secure in cliché land. The drama is the disaster he makes of his brother's wedding and the tears he witnesses from the women he has seduced and left. Matthew McConaughey as womanizer Connor Mead is type cast as a rake waiting to be changed into a loving human being, The plot with returning dead lovers to teach him a lesson about having feelings is not quite as exotic as it sounds, for it is a device mainly to show him as a callow youth squiring and losing the love of his life, Jenny Perotti (Jennifer Garner). For a rom-com, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is as dramatic as it could be, more Dickens than Apatow. While it’s not designed for security or privacy, it does some smart traffic shaping upstream at Speedify’s servers, so your traffic is automatically sent to the connection best suited for it. Speedify does (almost) everything that Dispatch did, but it also includes a built-in VPN. Think of it like an internet Voltron: Each of those individual connections-home Ethernet, Wi-Fi from down the street, and your phone’s 4G-are all powerful in their own right, but together they’re unstoppable. Connectify Dispatch was a load balancer that distributed your computer’s traffic across all of the available internet connections your computer had access to. When we last looked at Connectify, we tested out Connectify Dispatch, the app that would eventually become Speedify. Speedify is a combination software load balancer and VPN from Connectify, a name you may remember. If you’ve ever had to sit on hotel Wi-Fi waiting for a webpage to load, watched YouTube stutter over every little video, or (in my case) gone out to a public event and struggled to upload photos using 4G because hundreds of other people were trying to do the exact same thing, you know what we mean. Maybe you’re traveling and have a flaky connection that’s not stable enough to get anything done. In other cases, stability is the thing you need, not necessarily speed. In a perfect world, you could do all of those things without any of them slowing to a crawl. But other times, you need all the speed you can get-like if you’re downloading files in the background while playing your favorite multiplayer games and your roommate streams Netflix in the next room. If it’s stable and the bandwidth is good, you don’t really need more. In most cases, one persistent connection to the internet is enough. Here’s how to do it, with a tool called Speedify. Imagine if you could combine them all into one huge pipe that delivers faster downloads, smooth streaming, and crisp video calls. The downside: you can usually only use one at a time. You may not realize it, but you probably use multiple internet connections every day: your home network, your phone, and even hotspots and other devices. Expressing our internal worlds through pictures, words, and symbols and sharing them with one another, riffing off of each other’s ideas is how much of modern mathematics is done. Contrary to the trope of the socially dysfunctional lone genius, mathematicians collaborate for most of their work, which makes them in some sense much like musicians. Credit: Leo SorelĪs with music, everyone incorporates the underlying language, grammar and technique in their senses differently, and thus comes to their own individual understanding that leads them to express ideas in their own unique way. To think of math as just formulas memorized through rote learning and mechanical thoughtless symbol shunting tragically misses the point. Through this process, a mathematician begins to develop a sense of the nature of mathematical ideas and their logical interrelationships, thus becoming sensitive to new ideas while becoming better equipped to manipulate them internally. Mathematical problems can be viewed as structured opportunities to play with what is already known in order to discover what is not. This is the language of mathematics its grammar, and its technique. A student must become adept with numbers and other symbols, various rules of algebra and calculus to manipulate symbols, and several functions. The process thus expands naturally from creative absorption to transformation, and eventually to execution. As the mastery of both the instrument and the underlying language expand, the mind becomes more sensitive to different ideas while the body becomes more competent at putting those ideas in practice. All the while, the fun comes in imagining and experimenting with the technical and linguistic components one has incorporated, in order to invoke a sensation, express an emotion, or tell a story. To improvise or compose one must learn the technique of the instrument and the harmonic and rhythmic language of music. Math can be experienced as play in much the same way music is. Can you spot the inference to be made here? It deeply informs my life and I would love to see it become more present in our culture: Developing the representation is thus a form of self discovery, while transforming it is a kind of play. Much of this “thought work” can be summarized as first creating, in the senses (and perhaps on a whiteboard or an instrument), a representation of an idea, and then imagining it transformed in creative and useful ways. Although the lifestyles of mathematicians and musicians might seem worlds apart, at least for me, the “thought work” behind them are more closely related than you might think: the magic of engaging with math and music fundamentally changes the way you imagine and create. What I would like to see further explored, are the commonalities between the subjective experiences of doing math and music. You can find math the construction of modern harmony and counterpoint, development of rhythms, and the proportioning of arrangements. Still, I continued reading math texts, as well as tutoring high school and college students, whenever I wasn't touring around the world. Upon graduation, however, I decided to spend my twenties back on stage rather than in a graduate school library. At school, I became enamored of math because of the allure of the elegant theoretical worlds mathematicians built. I started learning music at nine years old and worked as a musician through my teenage years, but opted to attend a university instead of a conservatory on the advice of my music mentors who encouraged me to learn more about the world. Still I believe the two disciplines are connected by an uncanny similarity in the roles creativity and imagination play in both. But, to me, the notion that math and music are the same thing is both terribly poetic and also too reductionist to be useful. My compositions are developed using relationships between sound frequencies. My practice involves using ideas of mathematical transformations on melodies, rhythms, and harmony. My skill set allows me to interpret musical experience through the language of mathematical structure and creative problem solving. My typical evening involves leaving the stage shortly after midnight and then preparing some problems in number theory or combinatorics until about 3 or 4 AM. Like most New Yorkers, I tend to work late. Incompatible or outdated audio drivers can cause Discord Push to Talk issues. Compared with a hard vinyl doll, Manhattan Toy’s plush Wee Baby Stella Doll is a great first friend (and also a pick in our guide to the best dolls). Because the best musical toy is the one that doesn’t end up “accidentally” buried in the diaper pail.īaby dolls can make wonderful toys and companions for 1-year-olds because they allow kids this age to see some of their own needs (bottle, diaper, blankie) reflected back at them. With two civilized volume settings, this thing is just chirpy enough to stimulate tots-but without driving caregivers batty in the process. I suspect the appeal lies in the generously sized, tempting center push-button (which activates the melodies), the easy-to-grasp beaded handle (my toddler daughter would clutch it in one hand while cruising around as if she were wielding a tiny boombox), and (perhaps most important) its tolerable sound level. It plays an array of classical tunes, like Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Mozart’s Serenade No. Despite that humble introduction, the Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy would prove irresistible to my son and, later, his little sister. When I was expecting my first child, a friend bequeathed me a garbage bag full of used baby gear, and this unassuming little piece of plastic was in the jumbled mix. Some of the toys on this list are officially recommended for kids age 2 and up and age 3 and up. And we mined the collective knowledge of parents and other caregivers on our staff. To identify fun and engaging gifts for the youngest recipients, we spoke with Cleveland and other child-development experts. This age is also a good time to invest in keepsake items that will remain special as a child grows up. So toys with different textures that invite small hands (and, of course, mouths) to grab and investigate are good choices, as are starter ride-on toys that offer the opportunity to roam. Play at this age is largely focused on sensory exploration and motor development, Cleveland explained. Look for toys that are open-ended, like blocks and stacking cups that can be played with in more than one way, said Sarah Cleveland, director of a child-care center near Austin, Texas. With the right toys and gifts, you can set your child up for years of fun. (Be sure to save those boxes!) Other kids this age have already begun to develop their own unique preferences, personalities, and abilities. In fact, they may be as excited by the packaging as by what’s inside. With every turn of this activity toy, there’s something fun & exciting for your little one to see, hear and do. Waking too soon can actually be dangerous. While Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow every year before deciding whether or not he will continue to hibernate, has reported that groundhogs outside captivity will actually remain in hibernation if cold weather continues through March. Their breathing decreases from 16 breaths per minute to just two, and the heartbeat goes from 80 beats per minute to five. In contrast, the human body enters a state of mild hypothermia after dropping just three degrees Fahrenheit, and a drop to 70 F results in death.īody heat is not the only thing that drops when a groundhog enters hibernation. Much of this activity is done around gardens/farms, which is why groundhogs are so widely considered as pests.During hibernation, the groundhog's body temperature drops from 99 F to as low as 37 F, according to the National Wildlife Federation. However, they are open to communcation with other groundhogs, making high-pitched noises to warn others of predators. The only time that they really interact with other groundhogs is when they’re looking to mate. While foraging, these are very solitary animals. With adults weighing over 10 lbs, that’s over 3 lbs of fruits, vegetables, and grasses every single day. In fat, groundhogs eat about 1/3 of their weight in vegetation every single day. As these are herbivores (that eat the occasional insect), they need to eat a lot of food in order to get the energy that they need. While they’re awake, groundhogs spend most of their time eating. For example, if a farm is active during the morning, a groundhog may wait until later to come out and forage. This means that they may be active earlier or later depending on activity levels around them. Groundhogs are also very solitary animals, so they prefer to be active when there aren’t any disturbances. This is likely because of the fact that these are the least active times for their natural predators, so it’s the safest to be out. Typically, groundhogs are more active during the early morning and the early evening - when the time of day is just transitioning. They survive off of the remaining stored fat until springtime brings warmer weather and vegitation for feeding.Īs stated, groundhogs are diurnal and are generally active during the day and sleeping at night. When hibernation ends, the groundhogs have lost about half of their body weight. They experience periods of torpor (very low activity) and arousal (awake and alert to use the bathroom). Groundhogs don’t just sleep entirely through the winter, though. While hibernating, their body temperature drops as low as 35F and their heart beats 4-10 times per minute. They can hibernate for as little as 3 months, though, and males hibernate for a shorter time than females.īefore hibernating, they eat a large amount of food and weigh their heaviest that they weigh all year. This hibernation period usually begins in October and ends by March. In fact, they’re true hibernators, meaning that they enter a period of deep sleep for several months instead of just reducing activity levels. Groundhogs are active during the day, so why are there long periods when these creatures aren’t seen? Do groundhogs hibernate? So, groundhogs are out and about during the day, eating throughout most of that time, then return to their burrow at night. Groundhogs can be active earlier/later depending on the time of year. While humans are also diurnal, we don’t always share the exact sleep schedule. Instead, they’re diurnal, meaning that they sleep at night and are active during the day from spring to fall.
